Now some interesting Carpenter information from around 1768

Zack's Greatgrandfather was Jeremiah Carpenter. Jeremiah and his brother Benjamin settled in the area of the mouth of Holly. Jeremiah had been carried off as a child to Ohio by Indians and lived with them until he was grown and then he returned. The Indians had killed his parents Nathan and Kate Carpenter in Greenbrier County,WV. He then settled on what was afterwards known as the John P. Hosey farm. His brother erected a cabin at the placed now occupied by the town of Palmer. A man by the name of O’Brien blazed a trail from Ohio to the mouth of Holly. The Indians did not know of the settlement on the Elk until they found the trail and followed it.The Indians found the house of Benjamin and tomahawked and scalped his wife and small child as they were in the yard making soap in a kettle setting on a fire.It has been past down through the family that the small child was thrown into the kettle by the Indians. Benjamin was down under the river bank graining a deer skin. He ran to the cabin to get his rifle that he kept above the door and was shot and killed by an Indian hiding there with his own gun. They kidnapped Benjamins daughter and planned to take her back their camp in Ohio.
